Stars New Uniform Unveiled

19 09 2007

Black is the New Green

The Dallas Stars today unveiled the hockey club’s new jerseys, to be worn during the 2007-08 season. The new uniform design is part of the National Hockey League’s launch of the new Rbk EDGE Uniform System™, adopted League-wide for the coming NHL season.

Following more than two years of research and development, new uniforms are being brought in to enhance player performance and increase player protection and safety. The NHL and Reebok worked together to develop a new uniform system that uses state-of-the-art materials that are more breathable, more resistant to water absorption and offer a greater range of motion. New Reebok Bead Away™ and PlayDry™ technologies work together to offer players a 14 percent reduction in pre-game jersey weight. The drier uniform retains up to 76 percent less moisture throughout the game.

The sleek, new uniforms feature a new look for the Dallas Stars on their dark sweater – for the first time in the team’s history, a word-mark is the primary emblem on the front of the jersey, as the team’s home of “DALLAS” is cleanly presented across the chest accompanied by the respective player’s uniform number centered underneath. The Stars and New York Rangers are the only two teams in the NHL to feature a simple word-mark on the new sweaters. The team has also returned to its primary color of black for the dark jersey that was utilized during the team’s first six years in Dallas from 1993-99. The traditional Dallas Stars logo is featured on each shoulder.

“We are very excited about the look of our new uniforms,” said Stars President Jim Lites. “We wanted a clean look that was more traditional. Black looks tough and is cool, reflecting this team’s personality. Plus fans have always loved the black jerseys that we wore in our first years here in Dallas and it is a great look. We’re thrilled with how they turned out.”

The Stars’ new white jersey features the traditional Dallas Stars logo on the chest, with simple green and gold striping on the mid-sleeve and at the bottom of the sweater. The white jersey also includes the team’s secondary logo on the shoulders, featuring a star inside the state of Texas with a “D” for Dallas. The team has included this shoulder patch on at least one of their sweaters every season since coming to Dallas in 1993.

“The great thing about the white jersey is that it continues the traditional look our uniform has always had over our 14 years in Dallas,” said Lites. “We’ve always been fond of our primary logo, as we feel it is one of the best marks in hockey.”

National Hockey League teams will primarily wear dark jerseys at home and white on the road this season. The Stars do plan on wearing the white jersey for select home games (as most teams will do around the league to don both jerseys in front of their home fans).

“I think the new uniforms look great,” said Stars captain Brenden Morrow. “It’s a strong look and I really like the return to black. The new jersey is comfortable and I like that it will be drier and lighter in the third period of games.”

The Stars organization included many voices in the design of the new jersey.

“The design process was extensive and we utilized many people’s thoughts and ideas across our entire organization,” added Lites. “We sought out our players’ feedback on the jerseys as well. Some of the strongest opinions and direction came from people who are not typically involved in creative marketing ideas like Daryl Reaugh and Dave Tippett. In the end, we came up with a look that all of us feel very good about. I love it.”

The new Dallas Stars jerseys will be used in all games this season, beginning with the team’s pre-season opener at home on Sept. 18 vs. St. Louis.

Fans can be one of the first to purchase a new authentic or replica Dallas Stars jersey by coming to any StarStuff store at select Dr Pepper StarCenters, by visiting the Fan Shop at American Airlines Center, or by calling 214-387-5611 to order one by phone.

Iowa Stars Says Hockey Will Continue In Des Moines

5 09 2007

DES MOINES, Iowa — KCCI.com One of the biggest draws at the Iowa Events Center may soon be in for a major change. The Iowa Stars’ parent team, the Dallas Stars, wants to build a new arena near Austin, Texas. It would eventually be home to its AHL franchise. If the Iowa Stars move out for Texas in 2010, team owners said another team would move in.

“We were talking earlier in the week about what we could do to generate more publicity for the Iowa Stars,” said Iowa Stars President John Olver. “It’s our goal that we will fulfill the next three years of our affiliation agreement, and we hope to extend that and go beyond that. At the same time, we don’t know what the future holds in that end,” Olver said. Dallas Stars’ deal with Des Moines ends in 2010. But Iowa Stars’ owners promise hockey will continue in Des Moines, even if the team leaves. “AHL Hockey is committed here to Des Moines for the next eight years,” said Iowa Events Center General Manager Matt Homan. Iowa Stars season ticketholder Amy Schmelzer has been in the crowd, wearing her green and black gear to nearly every game. She said a potential name change might keep her out of the team store. “I guess for me, as long as it continues to be AHL hockey, I’ll continue to go,” she said. “Why am I going to invest my loyalty in this team if they’re only going to be here another three years?” She said that as long as another NHL team moves in and replaces the Stars, she’ll get her hockey fix. “Yeah, I think I can live with it. It’s not the end of the hockey universe for me,” she said. The Iowa Stars don’t really want to change, but said the move could provide an opportunity. “If for some reason that was to change, we would use all of our resources to work to improve the affiliation with a potentially more regional team,” Olver said. The Iowa Stars are locked in with Dallas until 2010 and if it does not field an AHL team until 2015, the team will have to pay a $12.5 million penalty. The Iowa Stars said that after some restructuring in the off-season, the number of new season ticket holders is up 30 percent from last year.

The Stars advertisement, above, is posted on a Dallas-area billboard.

As part of the team’s “come into the cold” ad campaign to sell seats for 2007-08, the Stars took a shot at the NBA’s referee scandal on a billboard near the American Airlines Center, the building the Stars share with the Dallas Mavericks.

The message? “The only thing our refs shave is the ice.”

But Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn’t seem to mind, according to the Dallas Morning News.

“I think it’s hysterical,” Cuban told the newspaper. “Good for them. It’s a fun ad.”

The campaign, dreamt up by the Stars and Austin, Texas ad agency Door Number 3, is aimed at conveying the toughness of hockey players in an edgy style. One board reads “One game a week? Is the N in NFL for Nancy?” the Morning News reported. Read the rest of this entry »
